Wild Strawberries begins with a highly symbolic dream sequence and follows Professor Isak Borg as he travels by car with his stepdaughter to receive an award from his former university. The journey gives rise to a series of reminiscences and flashbacks, as the aging Borg revisits scenes from his youth and reflects on an unhappy marriage.Bergman pays tribute to his predecessors by casting the great filmmaker Victor Sjöström in the role of Borg, but he also seeks a new form of intellectual cinema characterized by an exploration of the nature of existence.
