Jackie (Karen Sillas) and Michael (Tom Noonan, Manhunter, also screenwriter and director) are colleagues at a law firm in New York who, after months of flirting, agree to meet for a "first date" at Jackie's apartment. Their initially charged and playful interaction gradually develops into a long, dark night of the soul, as the two future lovers get to know each other properly for the first time and discover that everything may not be as it seems. What Happened Was..., which won the jury prize at the 1994 Sundance Festival, is a milestone in American independent film, with two fantastic actors in the lead roles and an often poignant, often bleak but always refreshingly honest exploration of dating in the big city.
