Haunted by his tragic past, soldier Tommy Conlon (Tom Hardy) returns home for the first time in fourteen years to seek help from his father (Nick Nolte) with training for SPARTA, one of the biggest competitions in MMA. Tommy, who was once a promising wrestler, sees a clear path to victory in the competition, unlike his brother Brendan (Joel Edgerton), a former boxer who is now a teacher.
