All Jack Burns owns is his horse and his rifle. But that's all he needs. A horse for the freedom to ride out into the majestic expanses he loves. And a rifle to defend that freedom. But after Jack tries to free his best friend from prison, he himself becomes the one who must be deprived of his freedom. The chase leads up into the mountains and is led by Sheriff Johnson, who does everything he can to stop Jack. But secretly, he admires the sympathetic outsider and would rather see him get away...

Often listed as one of the best westerns of all time, THE MAN FROM LARGE EAST is a tribute to freedom, fittingly written by the legendary Dalton Trumbo, who was blacklisted by Hollywood during the senseless Russian paranoia of the 1950s. Two years earlier, he also wrote Kirk Douglas's smash hit SPARTACUS. One of the film's many fans is Steven Spielberg, who ensured that Universal restored the film in this version.
