In the mid-19th century, over a million Swedes fled the poverty and famine of their country to emigrate to America. Among them are Karl Oskar and Kristina, a couple from Småland, who, together with their children and friends, embark on a long and arduous journey toward an unknown fate. Many aboard the ship never reach their destination, while the survivors are driven by a dream of a new life where they can cultivate their land and eat their fill, a dream of finding happiness in the Promised Land.

The film adaptation of Vilhelm Moberg's grand national epic is the most expensive and ambitious in Swedish film history and took four years to complete, including the sequel Nybyggarna (The Settlers).
