World War I. After Arturs, a farmer's son, sees his mother brutally murdered by the Germans, he and his father enlist in the Latvian battalion of the Red Army. Arturs is 16 years old and actually too young, and his father has passed the army's retirement age, but with revenge and hatred of the Germans boiling in their blood, they are welcomed nonetheless. For four years, we follow Arturs' fate, live with him, feel with him, and witness how he changes from an inexperienced boy to a seasoned warrior, while half the country's population falls victim to the war.

YOUNG SOLDIER is a film with strong realism, shot on authentic battlefields. It is based on Aleksandrs Grins' autobiographical novel (banned in the Soviet Union for over 60 years), which, like the film, also depicts how the Russians turned their weapons against the Latvians after the war. The film was Latvia's Oscar entry in 2021 and knocked Avatar off the top spot as the biggest box office hit of all time in its home country!
