THE FILM THAT STARTED THE FRENCH NEW WAVE
A petty criminal impulsively takes the step into serious crime by shooting a motorcycle cop during a carjacking. But despite now being wanted by the police, he finds it difficult to focus on anything other than charming a young exchange student into accompanying him on a trip to Italy.
Legendary status has followed Jean-Luc Godard's debut film ever since it hit theatres. In one fell swoop, Breathless (À Bout de souffle) broke with all the conventions of film style and narrative. In doing so, it naturally created a whole range of new styles and formed a school for the French New Wave and several other generations of filmmakers who followed in its wake. Pop culture landmarks, jump cuts, long takes with a moving camera (before it was actually a practical option), the use of existing light sources instead of artificial ones – the list of everything innovative that Godard and cinematographer Raoul Cotard created in this film is extensive. Combined with the charismatic stars found to play the young, narcissistic, and cynical lovers, the film effectively captured the anti-authoritarian mood of the time. Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg became the very definition of cool for a long time to come. "Changed cinema forever" – BBC
"Influential, Innovative, Incredible" – Little White Lies
"Modern cinema begins here" – Roger Ebert
“By knowing exactly what he wanted to achieve and how he would do it, Godard succeeds here in creating a turning point in film history as clear as Griffith's withThe Birth of a Nation and Welles with Citizen Kane before him." – Roger Ebert
"The film is both playful and deadly serious. Godard never resists parody, but he is also honest in his intention to deconstruct the film's mode of expression. Image and sound create meaning, but not in the traditional way." – Derek Malcolm, The Guardian
