Thieves Like Us Blu-Ray
A group of criminals recklessly escape from prison in Mississippi during the Depression era. They survive by robbing banks and hiding at a gas station owner's house, where the injured Bowie (Keith Carradine, Nashville) falls in love with the owner's daughter Keechie (Shelley Duvall, Three Women). Robert Altman followed up multiple award-winning classics such as M*A*S*H and The Long Goodbye with Thieves Like Us, a film adaptation of Edward Anderson's pulp novel, which was made as part of one of the greatest series of back-to-back classics by any filmmaker. Altman's film, previously adapted by Nicholas Ray as They Live by Night, takes a more faithful approach to the source material, preserving the novel's original tone and period and returning to the historical and American mythological themes that Altman so brilliantly exploited in his earlier McCabe & Mrs Miller. The film was praised by critics, with Pauline Kael describing it as "the most flawless of Altman's films—a masterpiece."
