Harry Benson (Segal) is a brilliant computer scientist who suffers from seizures that cause memory loss and violent behavior. He undergoes experimental surgery and has electrodes implanted in his brain to detect impending seizures and stop them with an electric impulse. But the brain's pleasure center becomes addicted to the stimulation and triggers seizures at increasingly shorter intervals. If they become continuous, the blackouts will become permanent and Benson a murderous killer.

Mike Hodges' film adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel, admired by Terrence Malick and Stanley Kubrick, is a nerve-wracking masterpiece that should have been reevaluated long ago.
