The Sunday Woman Blu-Ray
A despicable architect is beaten to death, and an upper-class woman (Jacqueline Bisset, Day for Night) and her homosexual friend (Jean-Louis Trintignant, The Conformist) are the prime suspects, with a discarded letter implicating them in the crime. Inspector Santamaria (Marcello Mastroianni, Fellini's 8½) is assigned to the case and attempts to uncover the suspected murderer in upper-class Turin. With a murder mystery worthy of Agatha Christie, Sunday's Wife is also a sharp critique of Turin's upper class. The screenplay, by the famous duo Age & Scarpelli, known for their masterpieces in Commedia all'Italiana, including Big Deal on Madonna Street and The Organizer, is a clever adaptation of the best-selling novels by Carlo Fruttero and Franco Lucentini, with the main character Santamaria inspired by the real head of the flying squad. The highly acclaimed director Luigi Comencini (Misunderstood) often worked with a combination of comedy and drama, finding humor in tragedy, and is just waiting to be rediscovered as a master of post-war Italian cinema.
