When Alvin Straight learns that his brother does not have long to live, he decides to set out on a journey to make peace with him. Alvin's health is poor and his eyesight is even worse, but he has plenty of stubbornness and patience. So even though he doesn't own a car and can't afford a bus ticket, he sets off anyway—on his thirty-year-old lawn mower tractor! He has a 520-kilometer journey ahead of him from Iowa to Wisconsin – at a top speed of 8 km/h. But the warmth and respect he encounters along the way carry him safely forward...
