The Quiet Earth (Retro Film) (Blu-ray)
"ONE OF THE BEST FILMS IN HISTORY"
STARDUST MAGAZINE, Sweden
At 6:12 a.m., researcher Zac Hobson wakes up, but still seems to be in a nightmare. He turns on the radio and is met with a continuous static noise. He looks outside and finds that the road is deserted. He heads into the city, which is also completely devoid of life. The cars are empty, planes have fallen from the sky. With the frightening realization that he himself may have played a part in the demise of humanity, Zac desperately searches for signs of life. He settles in a luxury residence, appoints himself king, and dethrones God in his new world. But just as the great madness is about to begin, Zac discovers signs of life. Could it be a human being...?
Geoff Murphy's film won eight New Zealand Film Awards in 1987, including Best Film. Outside the country, the film did not make much of an impression, but over time its reputation has grown to become a cult film, ultimately landing among the most important works in science fiction. The film received an extra boost when renowned astrophysicist/author/TV presenter Neil deGrasse Tyson ranked it No. 5 on his list of the best sci-fi films of all time.
