A horse-drawn carriage stops on a deserted beach. A gloomy figure steps out and looks up at his destination—an ominous castle on a cliff high above the lapping waves. Thus, the perfect Gothic scene is set for Pit and the Pendulum, the second of Roger Corman's famous Poe adaptations, once again starring the ever-reliable Vincent Price (The Fall of the House of Usher, Theatre of Blood) in the lead role alongside the enchanting Barbara Steele (Black Sunday).

After learning of the sudden death of his sister Elizabeth (Steele), Francis Barnard (John Kerr) travels to his brother-in-law Nicholas Medina's castle to find out the cause of her untimely demise. An upset and grieving Nicholas (Price) can only offer vague explanations for Elizabeth's death, first referring to something in her blood, but later claiming that she literally died of fright. What indescribable horrors lie buried within the castle walls that can make one's heart stop? With Francis determined to get to the bottom of this mystery, the terrible truth will not remain buried for long.
