After the death of his son and heir, King Henry II (Peter O'Toole) is obsessed with finding a new successor and therefore summons his three remaining sons. His wife, the formidable Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn), whom he has kept imprisoned for the past ten years, is also summoned. As the royal couple make plans and flatter their sons, their passions range from tenderness to rage as they decide who will be England's future king.
