The Game Trilogy Blu-Ray
Toru Murakawa's Game Trilogy was made in the late 1970s and launched actor Yusaku Matsuda as the Toei tough guy for a new generation. Matsuda was the definitive film icon of the 1980s until his career was tragically cut short by cancer at the age of 40, after his Hollywood debut in Ridley Scott's Black Rain.
In this career-defining triptych, Matsuda plays Shohei Narumi, a cold-blooded professional assassin with few words, a steeltrigger finger, and a heart of stone, who in The Most Dangerous Game is hired by a company competing for a lucrative government air defense contract to eliminate its competitors. In The Killing Game, Narumi finds himself in the middle of a violent yakuza gang war, while his own brutal past catches up with him in the form of two beautiful women who still bear the emotional scars from his previous assignments. In The Execution Game, Narumi falls for a mysterious bar singer who may or may not belong to the same shadowy underworld organization as the rival enforcers he is hired to kill.
With cool black-and-white photography by Nagisa Oshima's collaborator Seizo Sengen and a bombastic film score by jazz legend Yuji Ohno, Murakawa's masterful films raised the bar for Japanese action cinema to new heights.
