THE COMEDY MAN is a British kitchen sink drama from 1964, directed by Alvin Rakoff, with a performance by Kenneth More that critics hailed as his best. Chick Byrd (Kenneth More) is fired from his job at a repertory theater after seducing the producer's wife and moves to London. At the age of 40, he realizes that this is his last chance to succeed as an actor. After moving into a flat in London with Julian, a fellow actor, Julian's career takes off after a successful screen test, while Chick's career continues to fail. After a life-changing event, Chick finally gets his big break and finds the fame he has always craved, but with a bank balance, celebrity status, and an established lifestyle, Chick must finally face the truth.
