Lona (Novak) is the girlfriend of a bank robber suspected of murder, and detectives Sheridan (MacMurray) and McAllister (Carey) are assigned to watch her apartment, where both become dangerously fixated—Sheridan on Lona, and McAllister on her neighbor, Ann (Malone). Lona then offers Sheridan a deal to kill her lover and run away with her.

With its themes of surveillance and obsession foreshadowing Novak's role in Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, Pushover is a triumph of suspense and a recognized influence on Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless. "
