In The African Queen (1951), based on a novel by C.S. Forester and directed by John Huston, Humphrey Bogart plays his Oscar-winning role as Charlie Allnut, the careless, gin-swilling captain of the steamboat African Queen, who transports supplies to small East African villages during World War I. Katharine Hepburn plays Rose Sayer, the sister of a British missionary (Robert Morley). When the invading Germans kill the missionary and raze the village to the ground, Allnut offers to take Rose back to civilization. She cannot tolerate his drinking or bad behavior; and he is not fond of her domineering, judgmental attitude. However, it doesn't take long before their passionate dislike turns into love. Together, the disparate duo works to ensure their survival on the treacherous waters and devises an ingenious way to destroy a German gunboat. Combined with John Huston's masterful direction and wonderful screenplay, this makes for a rare treat. Winner of the Oscar for Best Actor, nominated for 3 additional Oscars and 2 BAFTA Awards.
