In the 1960s, a series of crime films – or crime thrillers – became hugely popular with West German audiences. These films, based on the works of British crime writer Edgar Wallace and his son Bryan Edgar Wallace, combined traditional murder mysteries with horror and depicted mysterious murderers who stalked their victims through foggy English landscapes — from the streets of London to isolated country estates. Following the early success of the series after the release of Face of the Frog and The Crimson Circle, veteran producer Artur Brauner launched his own series of Wallace crime films with his company CCC Film. Here are five key films from CCC's crime series.

In The Curse of the Yellow Snake, a mysterious cult wants to get its hands on an ancient artifact that has been brought to London from Hong Kong. In The Strangler of Blackmoor Castle, a masked murderer strikes at a large British estate—a murderer who marks his victims' foreheads with the letter "M." London faces a double threat in The Mad Executioners, as hooded vigilantes roam the streets while a sadistic serial killer runs amok. Jack the Ripper lives on in The Monster of London City, where a series of brutal murders causes panic in the British capital. Finally, in The Racetrack Murders (or The Seventh Victim), people are dropping like flies in and around a stately home—and the murders may have something to do with the owner's prized racehorse.

With his masked killers, labyrinthine plots, and gothic atmosphere, Wallace blended crime, thriller, and horror elements into a potent mix that had a significant influence on both Italian giallo and American slasher films. The Masters of Cinema series is proud to present five of Artur Brauner's Wallace adaptations for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK from new restorations provided by CCC Film, along with a host of special features - including a bonus film presented in standard definition, The Phantom of Soho.
