The People of Hemsö A rich adaptation of Strindberg's classic novel about colorful characters on an island in the Stockholm archipelago. Madam Flod's farm on Hemsö welcomes a new farmhand, Carlsson. He is a man of action who causes quite a stir on the island, and not everyone appreciates his behavior. When he marries the widow of the house, her son Gusten has had enough. The Hemsö People was Arne Mattsson's first color film. The film is based on August Strindberg's novel from 1887. The novel has been adapted for film several times: by Carl Barcklind in 1919, Sigurd Wallén in 1944, and Sif Ruud and Allan Edwall became moderately popular as Flod and Carlsson in Bengt Lagerkvist's TV version from 1966. Körkarlen A powerful film adaptation of Selma Lagerlöf's classic novel about David Holm, who sits drinking in a cemetery on New Year's Eve with two men. He tells how the gravedigger will be replaced at the deathbed by the person who dies when the clock strikes twelve. After meeting a soldier who needs his help, he gets into a fight with the men and collapses just as the clock strikes twelve.
A cart creaks into the cemetery... The film is based on Selma Lagerlöf's novel from 1912. It has been filmed twice before: by Victor Sjöström in 1921 and the French La charrette fantôme in 1939, directed by Julien Duvivier. Mattsson's film was Sweden's contribution to the Berlin Film Festival in 1959. Nils Holgersson's Wonderful Journey An imaginative, colorful epic film based on Selma Lagerlöf's beloved family classic. The Swedish farm boy Nils Holgersson is a real rascal who is mean to the farm animals. As punishment for his cruelty, he is enchanted by the house elf into a little elf himself. Nils ends up on the back of the tame goose Mårten, together with the wild geese, who are on their way to their summer home in Lapland.
On his great adventure through Sweden, Nils fights the fox Smirre, is pursued by a furious statue of Charles XI, and rescues the eagle Gorgo from Skansen. But how will Nils ever be able to grow up again? Selma Lagerlöf's novel Nils Holgersson's Wonderful Journey Through Sweden was published in 1906-07. Keep an eye out for Gösta Ekman and Christina Schollin in small roles.
The animal voices are provided by Jarl Kulle (Mårten Gåskarl), Naima Wifstrand (Mother Akka), Georg Funkquist (the eagle Gorgo), and Toivo Pawlo (Smirre Räv), among others. Holger Löwenadler provides the voice of the statue of King Charles XI.
