Review
Audio: 5/5
In my opinion, if a film has good audio, it should transport you into the film, instead of you being a spectator outside, you feel enveloped by the sound and drawn into the film. This film succeeds incredibly well in doing just that. It makes excellent use of the atmosphere, creating a sound bubble and producing some very pleasant effects. Especially when our hero walks into the old hotel and you hear the lamps crackling above him, the doors creak and the floor creaks when he walks, it's completely silent otherwise, and then BANG, a sound comes with an explosiveness and pressure in the bass. You can't help but smile. The music is also very pleasant, and I don't know if you can call it music, but it has a very nice low-frequency, rhythmic punch here and there, which is very pleasant.
This film delivers very good, dynamic sound from quiet scenes to explosive ones. GOOD!
Image 3/5
There is nothing wrong with the image; it is detailed without being grainy and has some nice close-ups of faces and conveys this well.
Horror is a genre that has to be very good to be a good horror. Director Mike Flanagan does a good job with nice scenes that keep you engaged and convey everything well. There are intense scenes where they "transport" themselves to other people and the camera/body spins around in a different way. Mike does a good job, but it's difficult to surprise and scare with horror, he maintains a good mood throughout the film. It moves at a slow pace, but I like it. But for me to be impressed, I want scenes that I remember, details, views, something that sticks in my mind and makes me say wow.
I'm trying to find something to complain about, but I can't, and I can't say anything more than that the picture quality is good. But I can't get any further than that.
Story/Actors 3/5
In my opinion, a horror film must deliver well in order to be considered a horror film.
The plot is good, building on a classic film like "The Shining" and has a lot to live up to. It is based on Stephen King's novel, but perhaps the film is written in a worse way, because the story doesn't grab me and make me want to see what happens; it's too predictable, I could figure out who dies and who survives. But in my opinion, it doesn't deliver. It doesn't make me remember any twists or events. Only one scene was unpleasant, and that was about the baseball boy.
Ewan McGregor is an actor who I think finds it difficult to underperform. I like him, he always gives very good performances. But he doesn't shine here as he usually does, although he doesn't do a bad job either. Simply not one of his better films. On the other hand, we have an actress who has come a very long way from Swedish soap operas, Rebecca Ferguson. She delivers very well, she gives her character mystery and you are curious about her story, and she acts very well with her face and expressions. She does a brilliant job, and without her, I don't think the film would have gotten a good rating from me at all. I don't want to spoil anything by describing different scenes, so I'll leave it at that. She does an exceptionally good job. It's a shame the rest didn't do the same.
In summary 3.5/5
Fantastic sound work, very entertaining! If you have a Dolby Atmos sound system, I recommend the film, because the sound is great fun. Rebecca does a great job and lifts the film from 2.5 to 3.5. The rest is no more than OK. But horror is hard to say is more than OK. They rarely scare me; they often resemble poor attempts at action in my eyes.
