Stardust (Blu-ray)
DAVID BEFORE BOWIE. The artist we know today as David Bowie has achieved iconic status because he continued to evolve and challenge himself and his audience throughout his long career. In 1971, however, he was an oddball named David Jones with many releases but only one hit single to his name. For his career to take off, something new was needed. In this situation, he was sent on a promotional tour to the United States. A trip that would have a decisive impact on his transformation from a rather low-key singer-songwriter to the rock 'n' roll chameleon who achieved stratospheric success in the decades that followed. The first of these colorful personas was Ziggy Stardust. Instead of the traditional rock biography, we encounter a freely heldroad movie with acclaimed cinematography by Nic Knowland (Duke of Burgundy) framing the journey with wide-angle shots in warm colors. In his film, director Gabriel Range focuses on the tricky friendship between the artist who would become Bowie, skillfully played by Johnny Flynn, and the only person who, at this point, was firmly convinced of the greatness of what he was doing, publicist Ron Oberman (Marc Maron).
