After a convoy and its escort of American cavalry are attacked by Cheyenne Indians, only Private Honus Gant (Peter Strauss) and a young woman under the cavalry's protection (Candice Bergen) survive. They are forced to travel through the unforgiving wilderness of the American frontier in search of protection, and their journey reaches a tragic climax when they witness the vengeful US Army's's cold-blooded slaughter of the Cheyenne tribe. Ralph Nelson's Soldier Blue (1970), which was controversial when it was released and reflected the political climate of the time, is uncompromising in its anti-war stance and in its graphic depiction of the 1864 Sand Creek massacre. By shedding light on America's dark history and the inhumane actions of the US Army, this revisionist western is one of the most radical films in American cinema history.
