When Japanese New Wave director Nagisa Oshima interpreted this gripping story in the controversial In the Realm of the Senses forty years later, the film was banned in several countries for its explicit scenes of an erotic and violent nature. Even in Sweden, it caused a heated debate in the media when it finally premiered in theaters, but today it is praised for its stunningly beautiful imagery.
