Vittorio De Sica's Oscar-winning film is an international breakthrough for neorealism and an unforgettable fable about lost innocence amid the harsh reality of 1940s Italy. On the streets of Rome, two boys—best friends Giuseppe (Rinaldo Smordoni) and Pasquale (Franco Interlenghi)—set out to earn money for a horse by shining shoes. When they accidentally get involved in a robbery and are sent to a brutal juvenile prison, their loyalty to each other is put to the test. Shoeshine is a poignant portrayal of economic struggle made even more poignant by the children's perspective, and is one of the most significant achievements in post-war Italian cinema.
