THOSE WHO ARE COURAGEOUS ARE FREE
”People can be divided into two groups:
Those who lead and accomplish something, and those who follow and criticize.” – Seneca
The Stoic philosopher and playwright Lucius Annaeus Seneca has long served as Nero's mentor and advisor. Staying on good terms with those in power has made Seneca as wealthy as it has controversial. His once malleable protégé Nero has grown into a powerful, boorish, and paranoid emperor. A man-child who rules the empire as he pleases and can sentence anyone to death on a whim. The latest victim of Nero's persecution complex is Seneca. Nothing can prepare you for the frenzied extravaganza of eloquence, violence, and bold choices that isSeneca. Robert Schwentke's (Der Hauptmann, The Divergent Series, Red) is bursting with colorful scenes, imaginatively filmed by Belgian cinematographer Benoît Debie, known for his close collaboration with Gaspar Noé on films such asIrreversible, Love, and Enter the Void. The film is full of verbal duels fought between well-matched opponents. The screenplay is by Schwentke and Matthew Wilder, with much of the dialogue taken directly from Seneca's preserved writings. In the lead role, we see the always brilliant John Malkovich. He is joined by Tom Xander (Jolt) in the role of Nero and actors such as Geraldine Chaplin (The Orphanage), Andrew Koji (Bullet Train), Mary-Louise Parker (Red), and Julian Sands (The Ghosts of Monday) in smaller roles. It is, of course, bittersweet to see Sands in what we now sadly know will be one of his last roles.Xander is very entertaining as the mad emperor” – The Hollywood Reporter
