SOFIE GRÅDBØL PLAYS "THE ROLE OF HER LIFE" IN THIS YEAR'S BIGGEST DANISH BOX OFFICE HIT! EVERYONE LOVES ROSE!
SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO TAKE A STEP BACK TO MOVE MOVE ON
In the fall of 1997, a tourist bus rolls out of Aalborg with Paris as its destination. On board are Inger, her sister Ellen, and her brother-in-law Vagn. Otherwise, they don't know any of the other passengers. The bus has barely reached the motorway when Inger loudly introduces herself to the group. Or more precisely... she and "Rose," Inger's second personality. Highly informed about Inger's difficult struggle with mental illness, some in the group react with sympathy and concern, while others react with distaste. Regardless, the entire group is drawn into Inger's world and misfortune, whether they want to or not, culminating in Paris. Here it turns out that Inger has a hidden agenda with her trip, the possible outcome of which may be the explanation for why she has become who she is...
ROSE &is a film that, in a wonderfully Danish way, manages to mix seriousness with humor and warmth in an unforced manner that makes the film both entertaining and thought-provoking. This has been well received by both critics and audiences in Denmark, where the film topped the box office charts this spring and has now been seen by 365,000 moviegoers. More than any other Danish film so far this year.
Niels Arden Oplev is responsible for the direction and screenplay, which is based on his own sister's trip to Paris. Oplev is best known to Swedish audiences for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," which won a Guldbagge Award for Best Film and a BAFTA for Best Foreign Film.
In the role of Inger, we see Sofie Gråbøl, whom we know from successful TV series such as "Nikolaj and Julie" and "The Crime," for which she won a BAFTA. On the big screen, we have seen her in "I lodjurets timma" and "Vår tid ska komma" (from Studio S), among others. For her film performances, she has received two Bodil Awards (Denmark's equivalent of the Golden Globe) and no fewer than seven nominations. It is not impossible that her award shelf will be filled with her role in ROSE, which several critics have called "the role of her life."
