Papicha DVD
18-year-old Nedjama and her friend Wassila sneak out of boarding school at night to dance the night away in Algiers' secret nightclubs. Nedjama, or Papicha as she is known, also sells her highly sought-after, self-designed clothes there. On their way home, they laugh at posters urging women to cover themselves. But religious radicalism is becoming increasingly apparent. Despite the violent intrusion into people's private lives, Papicha refuses to be controlled and instead decides to organize a fashion show—with clothes made from the fabric of the veils!
Contagious joie de vivre and friendship that refuses to be subdued come together in Mounia Meddour's partly autobiographical debut, set in the turbulent Algeria of the 1990s. The film was selected as Algeria's Oscar entry, but was banned in its home country.
