Hasse Alfredson's hit film is based on Waldemar Hammenhög's novel Pettersson & Bendel, which was filmed as early as 1933 in a revamped (but successful) version starring Adolf Jahr and Semmy Friedmann. Here, the plot has been moved forward 50 years in time, and much else has also changed. For the better. Stellan Skarsgård is the initial P and Allan Edwall is B in the comedy duo P&B. Agnetha Fältskog sings the film's theme song, the hit It's So Nice to Be Rich.
