In a stroke of genius, director Marcel Camus places the mythological lovers Orpheus and Eurydice in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. He is the bon vivant adored by all women, she is a shy country girl fleeing a murderous pursuer. Their fates intertwine during a day of ecstatic carnival madness where anything can happen—except the predictable.
