WINNER – GOLDEN LION Best Film – Venice Film Festival 2021
* * * * “A serious, gripping and honorable film” – The Guardian
Audrey Diwan's second feature film is an adaptation of French author Annie Ernaux's autobiographical novel L’&Évènement. The film, which has been given the Swedish titleOMSTÄNDIGHETER (Circumstances), depicts France in 1963 and a young female student's desperate race against time as she attempts to have an abortion despite it being illegal. She dreams of being able to continue her university studies and thus escape her hopeless existence. OMSTÄNDIGHETERis a powerful and gripping drama, almost a thriller, about a time and an environment that restricted and condemned female sexuality. OMSTÄNDIGHETER &is a completely unvarnished, honest, and straightforward film that gets under your skin and won't let go.
OMSTÄNDIGHETER and Audrey Diwan were honored in September 2021 with one of the world's most prestigious awards: the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. "I made the film with anger and desire, with my gut feeling, with my head and with my heart. I wanted the film to be an experience where we get to share a young woman's journey. I am very moved to be standing here on stage," said Audrey Diwan in her acceptance speech during the award ceremony. In addition to the Golden Lion, the film also received the Fripesci Prize, the UAAR Brian Award, and the Arca Cinema Giovani Award for Best Movie.nbsp;The lead role is played with strong presence by 22-year-old French-Romanian actress Anamaria Vartolomei. The film's subject matter is highly topical, as several countries around the world are now tightening restrictions on women's access to legal and safe abortions.
