WINNER – 8 AWARDS – AUSTRALIAN CINEMA AWARDS
BEST FILM, SCREENPLAY, DIRECTOR, EDITING & ALL 4 BEST ACTOR AWARDS.
On April 28, 1996, Australia was shocked by a terrible event.
Nitram depicts the troubled life and events that led to one of Australia's greatest traumas in modern times, the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. Justin Kurzel's direction is restrained, sensitive, and respectful in its portrayal of the events leading up to the tragedy. We follow Nitram, who has been on the margins of society since childhood. Without success, he tries to make friends and find a sense of belonging. The film also depicts the price his parents have paid by trying to support him and set boundaries for years. Creating a loving relationship with a child who is not particularly interested is a difficult task. One day, however, a chance encounter with a woman who lives alone with her dogs gives Nitram a chance to come out of his shell. For a while, a different future seems possible. Essie Davis, as the mysterious friend Helen, along with Judy Davis and Anthony La Paglia, as the powerless parents, give consistently brilliant performances. Caleb Landry Jones is unforgettable in his portrayal of Nitram, balancing between suppressed anger and sadness over his outsider status.Nitram has been praised by critics and won awards in eight categories at Australia's equivalent of the Oscars.
