MAX VON SYDOW IN HIS LAST ACCLAIMED ROLE
On December 13, 1943, Operation Kalavryta is launched by the German Army's 117th Jäger Battalion. The mission is to encircle the Greek resistance movement in the small town of Kalavryta and wipe it out to the last man. But the freedom fighters put up unexpectedly fierce resistance and manage to capture 78 Nazis, who are executed the same day. Blinded by revenge, General Karl Le Suire orders his troops to exterminate not only the resistance fighters, but every living soul in the entire town.Max von Sydow plays the last survivor of the tragedy in this powerful war drama. The film is one of the most expensive ever made in Greece and was number one at the box office. The massacre in Kalavryta was undoubtedly the worst war crime committed by the Nazis during their occupation of Greece.
This is the first time the events have been depicted in a feature film.
