Private detective Philip Marlowe's business is going badly when the beautiful Clare Cavendish lights up his run-down office with her face. She has a job for Marlowe. Her lover Nico Peterson has disappeared without a trace, and the private detective is tasked with finding him. It turns out that Nico has been found dead outside the gates of an exclusive club. The almost unrecognizable body was quickly cremated, and the police seem to want to write off the case as a hit-and-run accident. But Clare is convinced that her boyfriend is still alive. Marlowe therefore continues to investigate the case obsessively and comes across a powerful and very wealthy family that will stop at nothing to get what they want...
