A GREAT ACTOR IN A GREAT ROLE
BASED ON MAIGRET AND THE YOUNG DEAD BY GEORGES SIMENON
The experienced Commissioner Maigret is called in on a new case. A young woman in an evening gown has been found murdered in a square in Paris. The investigation reveals a very tragic story that brings dark memories to life. The usually unshakeable Maigret feels the ground shaking beneath his feet once again.
Georges Simenon's classic detective hero has been portrayed on film many times before by giants such as Pierre Renoir, Jean Gabin, and Rowan Atkinson. But critics agree that no one has managed to bring Maigret to life as vividly and with such a strong emotional presence as Gérard Depardieu. This is the second time director Patrice Leconte has taken on one of Simenon's novels. The first, Monsieur Hire, was nominated for a César for Best Director and Best Film in 1990.
Maigret evokes the glamorous nightlife of 1950s Paris. Beautiful clothes, people, and environments are depicted with dazzlingly beautiful photography by Yves Angelo. But as we know, there was a flip side to that coin. We also follow Maigret to the dimly lit backyards and worn-out attic apartments during his investigations. Leconte gives us a classic detective story told with style and great empathy.Simenon dropped out of school at the age of fifteen and wasted no time after that. During a long writing career, he wrote hundreds of books. Seventy-five novels and twenty-eight short stories feature Inspector Maigret in the lead role. Most of them have been translated into Swedish.
