Spain, 1936. When the newly proclaimed democracy is threatened by General Franco's army, civil war becomes a reality. The Western powers turn their backs on the bloodshed, resulting in tens of thousands of angry young idealists from both Europe and the US traveling to Spain to defend democracy. One of them is David Carr, who travels all the way from Liverpool on his own initiative to risk his life in the Republican forces. After a quick training, the young men are equipped with outdated weapons to face the better-armed fascists, who also have the support of both Hitler and Mussolini. A bloody period ensues, but it is also a time of strong camaraderie and courage that far exceeds that of the enemy.
LAND AND FREEDOM is one of the most acclaimed films by Ken Loach, the British film legend whose 55-year career includes the Palme d'Or winners The Price of Freedom and I, Daniel Blake. The film won the Critics' Prize at Cannes and was named Best European Film of the Year at the European Film Awards.
