Denmark, 1913, just before World War I. One evening, the noble cadet Anton is invited to a ball at Baron Lövenskjold's magnificent mansion. Unsuspecting, he asks the baron's beautiful daughter Edith to dance, but since she is lame in both legs, she ends up in an extremely embarrassing situation. Racked with guilt, Anton becomes a frequent guest at the manor, and Edith quickly falls in love with him. But Anton's feelings are purely those of friendship and pity. Unable to be honest with Edith, Anton entangles himself in a web of increasingly worse lies and promises that quickly reach a life-threatening level.
With The Kiss &, Bille August is back with another hit to add to his list of major successes, which includes the Oscar-winning Pelle the Conqueror, the Palme d'Or-winning The Best Intentions, and the international blockbusters House of the Spirits and Les Misérables. The film is based on Stefan Zweig's novel The Burning Secret, and the main roles are played by Esben Smed, Clara Rosager, Lars Mikkelsen, and David Dencik.
