After studying to become a priest in Norway for several years, Trausti returns to Iceland to spread the Christian faith, but instead finds himself in the middle of a bloody feud. A large whale has washed ashore on the family's beach, which is a gift from above for a starving people, providing food for several years to come. But then a stormy man anchors with his warriors and goes into battle for the precious meat, during which Trausti's mother is mortally wounded. Suddenly, lessons about love and forgiveness seem distant when Trausti also takes up arms, now transformed into a furious warrior.
