Writer-director Takashi Shimizu's Ju-On: The Grudge series represents the gory pinnacle of Japanese chillers that swept the world at the turn of the millennium.The films introduce the anonymous family home in the suburbs of Tokyo where an indescribable evil lingers alongside its inhabitants, the sinister mother-son duo Kayako and Toshio Saeki. Shimizu's unsettling way of planning, his nerve-wracking eye for creepy details in the dark corners of the frame, and his innate talent for effective jump scares so impressed Evil Dead director Sam Raimi so much that he invited the director to helm two Hollywood remakes. The most important J-horror series is coming to Blu-ray with a 4K restoration of Ju-On: The Grudge and a wealth of bonus material, including Shimizu's two predecessors to The Curse and the diptych White Ghost/Black Ghost with stories set in the same terrifying universe.
