On her way to New York to start a new life, the proper career woman Dinah picks up two hitchhikers. The next moment, they attack her, and Dinah is dumped in a ditch. Bloodied and injured, she manages to make her way to a nearby police station, but receives no help from the malicious rural sheriff, who instead locks her up for vagrancy. In the cell next door sits a dangerous male prisoner, but as night falls, it is hardly him that Dinah needs to be wary of...

Yvette Mimieux and Tommy Lee Jones are the couple behind bars in this gritty thriller, considered one of the best films produced by B-movie king Roger Corman. The film's screenwriter, debutant Donald E. Stewart, won an Oscar six years later for The Lost World and went on to enjoy great success with The Hunt for Red October. Quentin Tarantino is a big fan of the film.
