One evening at a party, Parisian marketing professional Esther (Marina de Van) injures her leg on some industrial machinery. She is alone when it happens and doesn't even realize she has injured herself: the absence of pain fascinates her. As her life begins to take shape—an exciting promotion at work and new plans with her boyfriend Vincent (Laurent Lucas)—Esther becomes obsessed with thoughts of self-mutilation. A nuanced body horror film filled with striking and innovative scenes. Writer-director Marina de Van's groundbreaking debut film was part of the new French extremism movement and went on to influence filmmakers such as Julia Ducournau (Raw, Titane) and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance).
