Terrier Max is trying to cope with some major life changes. His owner is now married and has a small child, Liam. Max has such a strong need to protect the boy that he develops a nervous tic. On a family trip to a farm, Max and Duke encounter dog-intolerant cows, hostile foxes, and a scary turkey, which only heightens Max's anxiety. Fortunately, Max gets some guidance from veteran Rooster, who pushes Max to overcome his neuroses, find his inner alpha male, and give Liam a little more freedom. Meanwhile, Gidget tries to rescue Max's favorite toy from a cat-filled apartment with a little help from her cat friend, Chloe, who has discovered the joys of catnip.
