Review
X-Men: The Last Stand is the third installment in the popular superhero series, and it's an exciting film with a lot of new characters. When scientist Warren Worthington II announces a "cure" for mutant powers, an interesting philosophical question arises: are mutant powers a disease that needs to be cured, or are they an advantage that homo superior has over "normal" humans? It comes as no surprise that Magneto (Ian McKellen) and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants oppose the idea that they need to be cured and declare war on humanity. But it's a little tougher for the X-Men, led by Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Cyclops (James Marsden), and Storm (Halle Berry). If you are Rogue (Anna Paquin), for example, your power means that you cannot even touch your boyfriend, Iceman (Shawn Ashmore). To make matters worse, someone previously thought to be dead has returned and could be either a friend or foe. Director Bryan Singer has moved on to Superman Returns, leaving the franchise in the hands of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), whose best work is in the big action sequences, such as a battle between mutant armies. But it's difficult to handle the large number of characters when you add long-standing comic book stars such as Beast (Kelsey Grammer) and Angel (Ben Foster), and one character in particular deserved better than an off-screen farewell. And fans of the original Dark Phoenix story in the comic book may be overwhelmed by the film's resolution. X-Men: The Last Stand is probably the last film in the series, but the ambiguous ending leaves the possibilities open. The two writers most responsible for making the X-Men what they were, Stan Lee and Chris Claremont, will appear early in the film.
