Eli Wakefield (Burt Lancaster) and his son are tough adventurers from Kentucky who long for an exciting life in the Texas wilderness. However, they realize that their greatest challenge lies not in the unknown wilderness, but in the people they meet along the way. Eli finds himself in the middle of a bitter family feud and is confronted with both the deadly rage of a madman (Walter Matthau) and the love of a beautiful woman (Diana Lynn). He is soon drawn into a brutal power struggle where his convictions are put to the test.
