The Grandmaster is a martial arts drama written, produced, and directed by Kar Wai Wong. Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man (Tony Chiu Wai Leung) traveled from Foshan, China, to Hong Kong after the Sino-Japanese War, where he advanced in his martial arts and took on his rival Gong Yutian (Qingxiang Wang). When Gong retired and was ready to announce his successor, Ip Man started a school and began teaching his beloved art in order to find a suitable heir.
