New Zealand in the 1830s is a Māori world dominated by tribal warfare. Lay preacher Thomas Munro (GUY PEARCE) seeks redemption from a dark past and finds himself aboard a merchant ship bound for the newly established British settlement of Epworth. When the ship anchors for repairs, Munro finds himself in the middle of a battle between Maori tribes and witnesses Chief Akatārawa (LAWRENCE MAKOARE) slaughtering innocent people. Munro manages to save the life of Rangimai (TIOREORE NGATAI-MELBOURNE), daughter of Maianui (ANTONIO TE MAIOHA), a rival chief whose land Epworth leases through a delicate arrangement. As Munro begins to experience the deeply rooted racism and paranoia of the white townspeople towards the Maori, he becomes increasingly ostracised in the communityhe is supposed to serve and realizes that he has been brought to this isolated British outpost solely to add a facade of civilization. When one of Maianui's men is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Munro and Rangimai make the difficult journey into forbidden areas ruled by Māori warlords, in the hope of righting the wrong. EXTRAS: A visceral film experience from Maori director Lee Tamahori (Once Were Warriors, Die Another Day) and the producers of One Life, The Outrun, The Water Diviner, and The Matrix. "Magnificent... Historical accuracy that cuts to the bone." FILM THREAT
