A giant man-eating shark causes chaos off the coast of Long Island, while local sheriff Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) finds himself caught between a panicked population and a town council that wants to downplay the reported deaths. However, the increasing number of deaths cannot be ignored, so Brody sets out on a shark hunt with marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and the salty old sea dog Quint (Robert Shaw).
