1984: There's a garbage dump in our living room. Mor and Maria's world feels like sparks along the spine, Christmas is every day in their love nest; the two are like silver-catching magpies. The couple spend their evenings on pilgrimages in southeast London, nights when fireworks crumble over them as they carefully gather their goods. Balls of aluminum foil, chalk, paper, anything that has been neglected, left to the scavengers or garbage collectors, they take back to their nest. They hoard endless souvenirs from their nightly walks, carts filled with bags and more bags of joy for their love catalog that awaits them at the door. At school, Maria is sleepy after her nightly travels. Sometimes the stench gets stuck in her hair. If only they could smell the joy too. Her tiredness makes her forgetful. Nighttime is her and her mothers' time. Maria's teachers and classmates make her aware for the first time of the strangeness of her and her mother's loving regime, and she begins to reject it completely andAfter a night in which she disrupts their routines and causes an accident, Maria knows deep down that she wouldn't want it any other way. On Maria's last day of school, she walks home with her best friend of ten years, Laraib. When she gets home, two barefoot men are waiting for her at the top of the stairs. A tall, strange man, a stranger who carries a familiar scent of trauma, childhood pain, a gemini of knowing stings. His name is Michael, and he has come to stay.
