General Cypher Raige returns from a long mission and tries to make up for lost time with his son, 13-year-old Kitai.

When their shuttle is damaged after entering an asteroid belt, they are forced to make an emergency landing on Earth. It has been a thousand years since humans were forced to leave Earth for Nova Prime. The planet is now a strange and hostile environment. Cypher lies badly injured in the wreckage of the shuttle and pins his hopes on his son finding the emergency transmitter somewhere in the inhospitable terrain. Kitai has always wanted to prove that he is a soldier like his father. Now he has the opportunity.
