Art patron Mrs. Claypool (Margaret Dumont) intends to pay the pompous opera star Lassparri $1,000 per performance. Maybe that's why they call it grand opera!

This is also a grand comedy when Groucho, Chico, and Harpo fill a ship's cabin and more with wall-to-wall jokes, one-liners, musical riffs, and two hard-boiled eggs—all while thwarting Lassparris' plans and helping two young hopefuls (Kitty Carlisle and Allan Jones) get their chance. To save the opera, our heroes must first destroy it. They must also cross the sea as stowaways, deceive City Hall (though not the beard), shred legal mumbo-jumbo down to a reason clause, torment Mrs. Claypool, and unleash so much joy that many say this is the best Marx Brothers film.
